BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Shirley Chisholm is the first African American woman to be elected to Congress in 1969. She served for 14 years from her district in New York. She started her career with education administration. Then she earned her Masters Degree in elementary education. She got her degree from Columbia University. After she was a consultant to the New York City Bureau of Child Welfare. Her life experiences led her to the area of politics. She was a state legislator for three years before heading off to the United States House of Representatives.
