James Hart School’s 7th-grade chess team placed fourth out of 37 teams at the Illinois Elementary School Association’s state chess tournament this past weekend. Hart’s 8th-grade team earned a respectable 13th place finish out of 36 teams at their grade level.

An individual award was given to Khiry Lofton for placing third at board 4 for the 7th-grade team.

“Our chess program had its best showing at the state tournament ever,” said chess team sponsor Herb Ferguson. “Our kids worked very hard, and we had outstanding parent support. We’re already excited about our prospects for next year.”

The competition was held February 17th and 18th at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Illinois.
